The Koinobori, or carp streamer in English, are hoisted to celebrate National Children's Day on May 5 ( Kodomo no Hi ) in Japan. 
On this day, people suspends leaves Iris and Yomogi leaves on the doors of houses to ward off bad luck. Children take Iris baths. 
They are even allowed to drink Iris flavored sake . They can also enjoy traditional cakes prepared for the occasion such as kashiwa -mochi and chimaki . 
All these symbolic rites wish health and happiness to children. Each represents purification, growth, strength courage and perseverance. 
Qualities that are particularly wished for boys since the festival was initially intended for them. 
The girls have their own celebration on March 3 for hinamatsuri the dolls festival.
